Priest Comments on Wedding Traditions During Lent

According to TSN.ua: Father Oleksiy Filyuk, a priest from the Ternopil region, has addressed the Church's prohibition on weddings and religious marriage ceremonies during Great Lent. He explained that church weddings are not performed during this period, except in special cases with a bishop's permission. However, Father Filyuk emphasized that registering a civil marriage at the state registry office (RAЦS) remains an option for couples even during Lent, provided it is not accompanied by boisterous celebrations.

'Therefore, you can and should sign the civil registry.' Oleksiy Filyuk

The priest added, 'Let them register, as long as it doesn't involve major festivities.' These comments reflect an effort to find a compromise between long-standing Church traditions and the practical needs of modern couples. In predominantly Orthodox Christian countries like Ukraine, Great Lent is a solemn period of prayer and fasting preceding Easter.

Potential Impact on Ukraine's Demographic Situation

Against the backdrop of Ukraine's demographic challenges, such statements carry particular weight. They may encourage young couples to formalize their relationships legally, even during periods when traditional religious rites are restricted. This could serve as a significant factor in supporting population stability and encouraging family formation, which is a pressing concern for the nation's future.
