Giorgia Meloni

Giorgia Meloni is an Italian politician and has been the Prime Minister of Italy since October 22, 2022. She served as Minister for Youth Affairs in Silvio Berlusconi's fourth cabinet (2008-2011). She is the leader of the party 'Fratelli d'Italia' (since 2014) and of the party of European Conservatives and Reformists (since 2020).
Place of birth. Education. Giorgia Meloni was born on January 15, 1977, in Rome. Her father is from Sardinia, her mother from Sicily. Her father, a tax consultant, was sentenced to 9 years in prison in a Spanish prison for drug trafficking in 1995. He left the family in 1988 when she was eleven years old and moved to the Canary Islands. She spent her childhood in a poor Roman neighborhood called Garbatella and received her vocational training in linguistics at the Amerigo Vespucci Institute in 1996.
Political career. At the age of 15, she founded the student organization 'Forefathers', which aimed to combat the school reform project of Minister of Education Russo-Ervolino.

In 1996, she led the organization 'Student Action', and in 1998 she was elected to the Provincial Council of Rome for the National Alliance and was part of the Committee on Culture, School, and Youth Policy until 2003.
In 2001, the chairman of the National Alliance, Gianfranco Fini, appointed Meloni as the coordinator of the National Steering Committee of the youth organization of the party 'Youth Action'. At the national congress of this organization in Viterbo in 2004, she took the lead.
On May 8, 2008, she became Minister for Youth Affairs in Berlusconi's fourth cabinet (at the age of 31, she was the youngest minister in the history of the Italian Republic). Later, she also led the youth organization of the party 'Freedom of the People', 'Young Italy'.
In the lower house of the XV Congress from 2006-2008, Meloni was part of the National Alliance faction, and in the lower house of the XVI Congress from 2008-2011, she belonged to the Freedom of the People. In the lower house of the XV Congress, she was Deputy President of the House from May 4, 2006, to April 28, 2008, from June 29, 2006, to April 28, 2008, she headed the Committee on Communications and Foreign Information and the Commission for Granting Stock Status to the Carlo Finzi Fund.

After the parliamentary elections in 2013, Meloni was again elected to the lower house of parliament, belonging from March 19, 2013, to the mixed faction and on April 3, 2013, to the faction 'Fratelli d'Italia - National Alliance'.
On March 8, 2014, Meloni was elected as the president of the party 'Fratelli d'Italia'.
On November 4, 2015, she announced the founding of the movement 'Our Earth - Italians with Giorgia Meloni', which aims to unite all right-centrist forces.
On March 17, 2016, Giorgia Meloni announced her candidacy for the mayoral elections in Rome and received the support of Matteo Salvini, the leader of the Lega Nord.
On June 5, 2016, she suffered a defeat in the first round with 20.64% of the votes, finishing in third place.
After the elections of September 25, 2022, Meloni was re-elected to the lower house of parliament from the single-member district 3. Abruzzo (City of L'Aquila) with a result of 51.5%.
On September 26, 2022, the right-centrist coalition 'Fratelli d'Italia', 'Lega' and 'Forza Italia' won the elections to the Senate (44% of the votes). On October 21, Italian President Sergio Mattarella tasked Meloni with forming a government. On October 22, Meloni took the oath of office as Prime Minister of Italy, becoming the first woman in this position.
Views. Right-wing populist and Italian nationalist. She refers to herself as a Christian and claims that she defends 'God, Fatherland, and Family'. She opposes abortion, euthanasia, partnerships, marriages, and the upbringing of children by same-sex couples, stating that families should only be led by a man and a woman. She rejects the admission of non-European migrants and multiculturalism, for which the left accuses her of xenophobia and Islamophobia. She supports NATO but at the same time holds euroskeptical views on the European Union.
At one point, she supported improving relations with Russia (before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022) but vehemently condemned the attack on Ukraine. Meloni and other deputies voted for supplying weapons to Ukraine and promises to continue sending weapons to Ukraine.
Personal life. Meloni's partner is Andrea Giambruno, a 41-year-old television journalist from Milan. She has a daughter, Ginevra (born 2016). On October 20, 2023, Meloni announced her separation from Giambruno.
