Trial Begins for Kyiv Rehabilitation Center Operators

According to TSN.ua: A court in Kyiv will try the operators of a rehabilitation center who allegedly forced patients into unpaid labor. The center's activities were halted in March 2025 after a pre-trial investigation revealed that the men and women seeking treatment there were struggling with drug and alcohol addictions. This case highlights ongoing concerns about the regulation of private addiction treatment facilities in the region.

Investigators found that men undergoing rehabilitation were forced to work on a construction site, while women were compelled to cook and clean. A total of 11 people were made to live at the center and were denied the freedom to leave its premises.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

An indictment against four residents of the Kyiv region has already been submitted to the court. The organizers' actions are classified under Part 3 of Article 149 and Part 3 of Article 146 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, indicating the severity of the charges. The trial aims to establish all the facts of the case and determine potential consequences for the accused.

This case underscores the critical importance of protecting the rights of vulnerable individuals, particularly those battling addiction.

The exploitation of people in rehabilitation centers remains a persistent issue in Ukraine, calling for stricter oversight and reforms within the system of rehabilitation services. The outcome of this trial could set a significant precedent for combating such abuses in the future.
