Unique Ayalon Cave: eight new species of animals living without sunlight.
Unique Ayalon Cave
According to TSN.ua: The Unique Ayalon Cave, discovered in 2006, is an important part of an ecosystem that has been isolated from sunlight and rainwater for tens of millions of years. In this cave, scientists have identified eight new species of animals that can exist thanks to chemosynthesis. Among these new species are crustaceans, eyeless terrestrial creatures, as well as a new genus of scorpions.
The Ayalon Cave was discovered during work at the Neshar Ramla quarry, located near Haifa. This unique ecosystem attracted the attention of scientists not only due to the new species but also because of its exceptional food network, which does not depend on solar energy. Ariel Chipman noted that the Ayalon ecosystem is special in this regard.
Threats to the Ecosystem
However, the Ayalon Cave is under threat from human intervention. In 2021, scientists opposed plans to use the quarry for surface water dumping, as this could negatively affect this sensitive ecosystem. Authorities recognized the value of the Ayalon Cave and abandoned plans that could lead to its destruction. This decision allows for the preservation of the uniqueness of this natural site and its residents.
Preserving the Ayalon Cave is important not only from a biodiversity conservation perspective but also for scientific research, as the new species discovered in this ecosystem may provide valuable information about evolutionary processes and the adaptation of organisms to extreme conditions. Considering the threats posed by human activities, it is crucial to find a balance between infrastructure development and the conservation of natural resources. This case highlights the need for a responsible approach to environmental protection.
