Mistakes When Defrosting a Car: How to Avoid Fines and Damage.
According to ТСН: Although Ukrainian drivers can usually handle many situations, there is always a risk of problems that can lead to car malfunctions. Therefore, recommendations from leading automotive associations around the world have been gathered, as there are usually not many detailed instructions.
What Not to Do When Defrosting
The British Automobile Association (The AA) emphasizes that dangerous defrosting methods can not only damage the car but also lead to fines or even theft.
The most common myths and 'life hacks' that actually harm the car:
Hot or warm water. A sudden temperature change causes the glass to expand and contract, which can lead to cracks, especially on existing chips. In severe frost, water quickly freezes again, blocking the wipers and nozzles.
'Portholing' (driving with partially cleared glass). Limited visibility while driving is an administrative offense that is dangerous for all road users. All glass should be cleaned, not just the windshield.
Turning on frozen wipers. This is a surefire way to damage the wiper motor.
Wiping the glass with hands or sleeves. Such actions leave greasy marks and do not effectively remove condensation. Only use clean microfiber cloths.
Doubtful advice from the internet: hot water in a bag, potato for wiping the glass, hand sanitizer—all of this can worsen visibility or damage the car's coating.
How to Properly Clean the Car
Check the wipers. Make sure the wipers are off and not frozen.
Start the engine and turn on the heater. Warm up the windshield thoroughly; turn on the rear window and mirror heater. The air conditioner will help dry the air and prevent fogging from the inside. Do not leave the car unattended with the engine running.
Clear the car of snow. While the interior warms up, use a soft brush to remove snow from the roof, hood, and trunk. Be sure to clear the radiator grille and check that the headlights and turn signals are clean.
Remove ice. Use a plastic scraper and special de-icers for glass. Hard or metal objects can damage the glass.
Ensure full visibility. You can only begin moving after all glass is completely cleared of ice, snow, and condensation. A partial 'viewing window' is dangerous and punishable by law.
Additional Tips
Use a protective screen on the windshield after parking—even cardboard or a summer 'sunshade' from the trunk will work.
Modern cars, especially electric vehicles and hybrids, often have a pre-heating feature for the cabin and glass via a mobile app or key fob.
Keep an eye on the technical condition of the car: check the coolant level and windshield washer fluid, battery charge.
Following these tips will help drivers ensure safety on the road, especially during the winter period when car malfunctions can lead to dangerous situations. It is important not to neglect the recommendations of specialists and to take care of the technical condition of your vehicle.
