According to TSN.ua: Oleksii Voitiuk, a Ukrainian restorer and archaeologist, was killed in action in 2023 while defending the city of Bakhmut. He was 38 years old. Listed as missing in action since 2023, his death was only confirmed later through DNA analysis, after which the community held a farewell for the talented specialist who left a significant mark in the fields of archaeology and restoration. His death underscores the profound human cost of the war, which has claimed not only soldiers but also irreplaceable guardians of national heritage.
Professional Work and Recognition
Voitiuk worked at the Rivne Regional Museum, where he specialized in restoring ceramics and metal artifacts. His professional legacy includes the discovery of a Copper Age burial site, a major contribution to the study of ancient Ukrainian history. During excavations, he also uncovered the remains of the Czartoryski princes, a find that demonstrated his high level of skill and dedication. Beyond the museum, he served as an expert advisor to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in combating antiquities smuggling, highlighting his active role in protecting the nation's cultural heritage from theft and illegal export.
In 2022, following Russia's full-scale invasion, Oleksii Voitiuk volunteered for military service. He served as a machine gunner in the Territorial Defense Forces, his actions reflecting a deep commitment to defending his homeland from aggression.
Olha Morozova, the museum's deputy director, noted: 'There are very few restorers in Ukraine today. He received requests from all over the country. He had the ability and the passion for it, but it was not to be.'
Yurii Oitsius, head of the 'Ostvytsia' club, also emphasized Voitiuk's significance, stating that 'he wanted a new kind of archaeology, not the Soviet type.' Oleksii envisioned a path for the development of Ukrainian science, and his loss is deeply felt by the entire community. His memory will live on among those who valued his contributions to Ukraine's science and culture.
The death of Oleksii Voitiuk represents more than the loss of an outstanding specialist; it highlights the critical importance of preserving Ukraine's cultural heritage during wartime.
