Zelenskyy Rejects Land Swaps for Donbas in Talks with Russia and US.
Ukraine's Stance on Donbas
According to TSN.ua: In an interview with Corriere Della Sera, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy outlined his country's position regarding negotiations with Russia and the United States over the Donbas region. He firmly stated that any exchange of territory is unacceptable. Zelenskyy noted that the Donbas region encompasses approximately 5,800 square kilometers and emphasized the critical importance of a diplomatic approach to resolving the conflict. The Donbas has been a focal point of the war since 2014, making its status a core issue for Ukraine's sovereignty.
Zelenskyy has agreed to a diplomatic path, accepting a US proposal to freeze the current front line. However, Russia has rejected the idea of establishing demilitarized zones and free economic zones in Donbas, which complicates the negotiation process. The Ukrainian President affirmed that
“Ukraine will continue attempts to agree on ending the war at the negotiating table.”
In his statements, Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine is not losing the war but is paying a high price for its resistance. He declared:
“An exchange is not in our interests,”and asked: “Why should I do that? Because Putin imposes it as a condition for peace?”. Simultaneously, the president highlighted the successes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the front, demonstrating the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people in the fight for their territories.
Peace and Ukraine's Sovereignty
While peace is a vital goal, Zelenskyy insisted it must be possible 'not at the cost of Ukrainian territories and security'. This position reflects Ukraine's commitment to preserving its sovereignty and territorial integrity, despite the difficult circumstances of the negotiations. The international community remains deeply divided on how to achieve a lasting settlement.
President Zelenskyy's stance concerns not only territorial integrity but also mirrors Ukraine's broader course of upholding its national interests in international relations. The refusal to consider land swaps underscores Ukraine's resolve to fight for its sovereignty, despite pressure from Russia. Given the ongoing military actions, the importance of diplomacy in this context becomes even more relevant and necessary for achieving a sustainable peace in the region.
