January 7 – Feast of the Baptism of John: folk omens and what is strictly forbidden to do.
According to ТСН: Tomorrow, the Orthodox calendar celebrates the Feast of Saint John the Baptist — one of the most significant Christian holidays, honoring the memory of the prophet who prepared the world for the coming of the Savior. John the Baptist, also known as the Forerunner, baptized Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and called people to repentance and spiritual purification.
John led an ascetic lifestyle, consuming wild honey and locusts, which reflects his dedication to the spiritual path and righteousness. On the day of the feast, believers visit temples, pray before the icons of the saint, and participate in the sanctification of water, blessing water in churches or natural springs. The blessed water is considered healing and is used for healing and protection of the home.
In villages, ancient traditions were observed: people bathed in rivers for purification, worshipped at sacred sites, and made pilgrimages to monasteries dedicated to John the Baptist. He is mentioned in the Gospels as the prophet who called for righteous living. John baptized Jesus in the Jordan, opening a new era of salvation, and for his devotion to the faith, he suffered a martyr's death.
