Fry or roast: linguists explained the difference between the words.
According to ТСН: Many Ukrainians try to cleanse their speech of surzhik and calques, often rejecting native words. One of the relevant questions is how to correctly name the process of cooking: "frying" or "roasting".
Correctness of word usage
There is an opinion that only the word "frying" is literary, while "roasting" has no right to exist. But this is not true. Academic dictionaries of the Ukrainian language recognize both terms as correct.
Bahnij emphasizes: to consider the word "roasting" a mistake is incorrect. It has every right to exist in our lexicon.
Scientist Oleksandr Ponomariv points out that "roasting" and "frying" are synonyms, but in literary language it is better to use the word "frying".
Difference in context
Although both words have a common meaning, some philologists recommend distinguishing them depending on the cooking technology. The source of heat and the utensils are important.
Linguist Olha Khodatska suggests the following rule:
- Frying is used when food is prepared in utensils (frying pan, pot) with the use of fat (oil, butter).
- Roasting is considered appropriate when food is prepared over an open fire, charcoal, or hot surfaces without utensils (on a grill, skewers).
So, if you are using a frying pan, you are frying. If you are cooking on a grill — you are roasting meat over the heat. Both options are part of the rich Ukrainian language.
Interest in dialects
There is a growing interest among Ukrainians in dialects that are actively discussed on social networks. One such word is "p'yec", common in Western Ukraine. This dialect means a stove for heating or cooking food.
The word is normative and has Polish origins (from piec). In Lviv, a "p'yec" traditionally referred to a large tiled stove, and this word has become the basis for many stable expressions used in everyday communication.
Thus, the speech culture of Ukrainians continues to evolve, and understanding various terms and dialects becomes increasingly important. Delving into the nuances of the Ukrainian language helps not only preserve its richness but also better understand the culture of the people.
