Extreme Weather Cripples Ukraine's Railway Operations

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine's national railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, is facing major disruptions due to severe weather conditions across the country. As of the morning of January 27, numerous train services are delayed, particularly in the Odesa region, where fallen trees have damaged power lines, communication systems, and signaling equipment in at least ten locations. This has resulted in significant schedule deviations for passenger trains.

Current delays for some routes range from five to eight hours. For instance, train No. 127/128 from Zaporizhzhia to Lviv was struck by a falling tree, though no passenger injuries were reported. The Przemysl Główny to Zaporizhzhia-1 service is also delayed due to a holdup at the border.

Specific Train Delays

The most substantial schedule deviations have been recorded for the following long-distance services:

  • Train No. 38 Odesa - Uzhhorod is delayed by 7 hours and 50 minutes;
  • Train No. 78 Odesa - Kovel by 6 hours;
  • Train No. 166 Odesa - Chernivtsi by 5 hours and 55 minutes;
  • Train No. 12 Odesa - Lviv by 5 hours and 38 minutes;
  • Train No. 106 Odesa - Kyiv by 5 hours and 7 minutes.

The situation remains challenging, and Ukrzaliznytsia is urging passengers to exercise caution and monitor updates on train schedules. This disruption highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to increasingly frequent extreme weather events, which are often linked to broader climate patterns. The railway company is taking measures to restore normal operations as quickly as possible, but service may remain unstable in the coming days, and passengers are advised to plan accordingly.
