Ukraine Implements Emergency Power Outages

According to TSN.ua: Emergency electricity blackouts are being introduced across Ukraine on January 22, 2023. This measure is a response to severe strain on the national power grid, a direct consequence of Russian missile and drone attacks. The state grid operator, Ukrenergo, issued the directive to implement scheduled emergency outages at 07:35.

Regions Subject to Outage Schedules

The emergency outage schedules apply to several key regions:

  • Kharkiv and Kharkiv Oblast
  • Poltava Oblast
  • Sumy Oblast
  • Odesa Oblast
  • Zaporizhzhia Oblast

Additionally, parts of Kyiv Oblast have shifted to strict, scheduled blackout plans.

Regional power distribution companies, known as oblenergos, have provided updates on the situation in their areas. Given the volatility of the grid's condition, residents are urged to monitor official communications from their local distribution operator for the latest information. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed that Kyiv is now operating under a strict blackout schedule.

These controlled outages aim to preserve the overall stability of the electricity supply and prevent a total system collapse by reducing the load on the damaged grid. The energy situation is expected to remain precarious, so citizens should prepare for potential adjustments to the outage schedules.
