Warning Issued on Refilling Gas Canisters

According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian safety experts are warning the public against the dangerous practice of refilling disposable camping gas canisters, which can lead to explosions and severe life-threatening hazards. Denis Mykhalshenko, a safety specialist, emphasized that these small portable gas cylinders are designed for single use only. Attempting to refill them can create extremely hazardous conditions, posing a direct threat to both health and human life. This warning is particularly relevant for campers and those using portable stoves during power outages.

Safety Guidelines for Gas Canister Use

Experts also note that standard residential ventilation systems are designed for human occupancy, not for safely dispersing gases from canisters. This can lead to a dangerous accumulation of flammable gas indoors, significantly increasing the risk of an explosion. A safe distance of at least 1.5 to 2 meters must be maintained between a gas canister and any appliances. If other heat sources are present in the room, this required distance increases to five meters.

Careless handling of gas canisters can have tragic consequences. A recent horrific incident in the Cherkasy region resulted in a house being completely burned down and people being injured. This event underscores the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols when using gas canisters. Officials urge citizens to exercise extreme caution and to avoid refilling canisters to prevent endangering themselves and others.

The issue of safe gas canister use is especially pertinent in Ukraine, where emergency risks may be heightened by a lack of public awareness regarding proper handling procedures. Preventing tragedies caused by negligence with gas cylinders requires active public information campaigns and education on safe practices. Authorities and experts continue to call for vigilance, as every violation of safety rules can have fatal consequences for human life and health.
