Darnytsia District Residents Endure Freezing, Hazardous Conditions

According to TSN.ua: In Kyiv's Darnytsia district, residents of a building constructed just over two decades ago are living in a state of crisis due to a complete lack of heating and non-functional radiators. With apartment temperatures hovering around a mere 10 degrees Celsius (50°F), the situation poses severe hardships, particularly for those with pre-existing health conditions. This highlights a recurring issue in parts of Ukraine's post-Soviet housing stock, where maintenance has failed to keep pace with aging infrastructure.

Despite utility services claiming no violations and stating that the incoming coolant temperature reaches 70 degrees, the reality on the ground is starkly different. Residents continue to freeze, forced to find their own ways to cope. One resident, Anatolii Savych, shared that his disabled wife was hospitalized in intensive care with pneumonia and purulent meningitis, exacerbated by the immense difficulty of navigating the cold building with her wheelchair.

Failed Infrastructure and a Makeshift Heating Solution

In a desperate measure, a generator has been delivered to the building with the hope of restoring heat. Resident Valerii Lozheshnik confirmed its arrival, noting plans to connect it solely to power the heating pumps, meaning the building will still be without electricity for other needs. Meanwhile, to fend off the cold, residents are bundling up in as many as ten layers of clothing.

The building's common areas tell a story of neglect, with cut-off radiators and damaged walls. Even the building's shelter offers no reprieve, as its conditions are also substandard. For the residents, the promised quality of communal services exists only on paper, a stark contrast to the dire problems they confront daily.

The plight of this Darnytsia building is a stark example of the systemic challenges many Ukrainians face due to inadequate maintenance of public utilities. The absence of proper heating during winter can lead to severe health consequences, especially for vulnerable populations. This case underscores an urgent need for responsible authorities to prioritize immediate repairs and modernization of heating systems to ensure resident safety and basic comfort.
