According to TSN.ua: The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center has issued a warning that air quality in major cities may deteriorate sharply during cold spells due to the accumulation of hazardous pollutants. In winter, concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can rise significantly, posing a direct risk to public health. This is a common seasonal challenge in many regions with cold winters and reliance on combustion for heating and transport.

The primary sources of this air pollution are:

• Vehicle emissions;
• Heating systems.

Automobiles, especially those running on diesel fuel, are major urban air pollutants. Furthermore, the burning of natural gas, coal, firewood, and pellets in private homes and industrial facilities releases additional combustion byproducts into the atmosphere, further degrading air quality.

Anticyclonic weather conditions, characterized by temperature inversions, calm winds, or weak air currents, create a stable, dry environment that traps pollutants in the lower atmosphere. This is especially critical in large cities, where dense infrastructure and heavy traffic provide ideal conditions for smog formation. For instance, on January 20, Russian military attacks on Kyiv caused fires, which compounded the existing air quality issues.

Consequently, in Ukraine's major urban centers, particularly during periods of frost and stable weather, air quality can decline rapidly, raising serious concerns among residents and experts alike.

The worsening air quality in Ukraine, especially during winter frosts, underscores the urgent need for measures to reduce pollution.

Such measures could include tightening environmental standards for vehicles, promoting cleaner fuels, and incentivizing a shift to alternative energy sources for heating.
