Strikes Target Belgorod and Other Cities

According to TSN.ua: In the early hours of January 25, the cities of Belgorod, Taganrog, and Perm came under attack, resulting in explosions and major power outages. Belgorod regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov described it as

"the most massive shelling"
in the region's history. Reports indicate that approximately 40 missiles were fired at Belgorod, damaging the Belgorod Thermal Power Plant and other critical energy infrastructure facilities. These attacks on power grids are a common tactic in the ongoing conflict, aiming to disrupt civilian life and industrial capacity.

The strikes caused electricity to be cut off across large sections of Belgorod. In Taganrog, fires and a blackout were also reported, with city authorities attributing the power loss to 'transformer damage.' In Perm, the Zakamsk district was left without power.

Regional Situation

The situation in the region remains difficult. This incident follows a previous attack on January 10, which left 600,000 residents of the Belgorod region without electricity, heating, and water following a Ukrainian missile strike. The repeated targeting of energy systems creates a severe humanitarian crisis, especially during winter when the need for heating is critical.

These events point to an escalation of the conflict in the area, impacting not only city operations but also energy security. Attacks on energy infrastructure can have long-term consequences for the civilian population. Emergency services and authorities are likely under significant pressure to rapidly restore power and address the humanitarian issues arising from these assaults.
