Olena Kravets on Enduring Blackouts: Sleeping in Gloves and a 4°C Apartment.
Surviving Without Power
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian TV host and actress Olena Kravets has described the harsh realities of living without electricity during Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy grid. She detailed the severe challenges faced by residents in her apartment building, where the loss of power also means the loss of heating and running water.
The Harsh Conditions of a Blackout
Kravets lives with her family in an apartment building where temperatures in some units now hover between +4°C and +6°C. She explained that when the electricity is cut, the heating and water stop as well, because the pumps supplying these utilities are also electrically powered. This creates immense hardship for residents struggling to stay warm.
During one 12-hour blackout, Olena Kravets even had to sleep wearing gloves. Despite these difficulties, she has initiated a fundraiser for a generator or inverter to provide the building with an autonomous power source. As Kravets stated,
"We carry on, raising funds for an independent power supply for our building, holding our loved ones even tighter, and warming ourselves with human kindness."
Kravets's situation reflects a widespread crisis affecting countless Ukrainians during the war. These targeted attacks on critical infrastructure have made daily survival a struggle, impacting far more than just comfort. Grassroots initiatives, like fundraising for generators, highlight the vital importance of community solidarity and mutual support in times of crisis.
