Petition for the Revocation of Trokhanov's Citizenship: What We Know.
According to inkorr.com: On the official website of the President of Ukraine, a petition has appeared calling for the revocation of the citizenship of the Mayor of Odessa, Hennadii Trokhanov. This was reported by the publication 'Hlavcom' citing the authors' appeal.
Accusations Against Trokhanov
The author of the petition, Myroslav Otkovych, addressed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requesting to consider the issue of revoking the citizenship of the mayor of Odessa. 'In open sources, materials of journalistic investigations have repeatedly appeared, which contain data on the presence of a Russian passport and a Russian tax number for Hennadii Trokhanov. These facts indicate that he has dual citizenship, which contradicts the Constitution of Ukraine' - states the petition.
Otkovych emphasized that in the conditions of a full-scale war with the Russian Federation, such a situation threatens national security and undermines trust in local authorities. 'Trokhanov's defense of narratives beneficial to the aggressor state in the public space, as well as the protection of monuments containing symbols of Russian imperial policy (according to the officially published list of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory), only confirms the potential risk posed by Trokhanov's activities for national security and state defense' - it is stated in the message.
As of 22:00, the petition has collected almost 11,000 votes out of the required 25,000.
Response from the Mayor of Odessa
Hennadii Trokhanov had previously commented on information about having Russian citizenship. He claimed that law enforcement agencies have repeatedly confirmed that he does not have the relevant passport. Also, volunteer and activist Serhii Sternenko shared data from Russian databases, according to which Trokhanov has Russian citizenship, suggesting that the mayor may have been applying for a Russian bank card before the war began.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed his opinion regarding the situation in Odessa, which arose due to heavy rains. He ordered a thorough investigation of the work of the city authorities, which may have led to negative consequences.
The registered petition for the revocation of the citizenship of the mayor of Odessa emphasizes the risks to national security that may arise from his possession of Russian citizenship. This underscores the importance of monitoring high-ranking officials and their compliance with the interests of the state in wartime.
