Kyiv Heating Crisis: Parliament and 5,635 Apartment Blocks Lose Heat After Russian Strike.
Kyiv's Infrastructure Under Fire
According to TSN.ua: Following a combined Russian Federation attack on Kyiv on January 20, 2023, heating and water supplies were cut off in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament. The strike left 5,635 multi-story residential buildings without heating. Emergency services are now working to stabilize the capital's heating system. This incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of Ukraine's urban infrastructure to targeted attacks, even in the heart of the capital.
The situation deteriorated sharply after this latest strike. Prior to this, the majority of these buildings—80%—had their heat restored following a massive attack on January 9. As of the evening of January 19, only 16 buildings remained without heat.
Lawmakers Respond to the Crisis
MP Danylo Hetmantsev confirmed that parliament continues its work, but the building is cold due to the lack of heating and water. In turn, MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak announced that the parliamentary staff will work remotely because the shelling has left the building without these essential utilities.
This situation underscores the persistent consequences of military actions on Kyiv's civilian infrastructure, where ongoing shelling continues to disrupt the daily lives of residents.
The loss of heating during winter poses serious public health risks and complicates the operation of government institutions. While repair crews are attempting to restore services, the urgency of the situation demands swift decisions and actions to ensure the well-being of citizens.
