Seasonal Train Fare Discounts Eliminated: Who Loses Benefits Starting May 16.
Overhaul of Railway Travel Benefits System
According to TSN.ua: Starting October 1, Ukraine's railway discount system undergoes changes that will remain in effect until May 15. During this window, seasonal price reductions apply to specific passenger groups. However, once this period ends, certain citizens will no longer qualify for the reduced fares. This adjustment reflects the government's efforts to realign social programs with the realities of war and economic strain.
Who Faces Higher Ticket Prices?
Individuals with a war-related Group III disability will lose their 50% fare reduction. Caregivers accompanying people with Group I disabilities, as well as those with Group I or II disabilities, will see their benefits revoked. Additionally, World War II combatants aged 85 and older will no longer be eligible for discounts. Parents of military personnel who died or went missing in action will also lose their discount privileges.
Who Can Still Travel at a Reduced Rate Year-Round?
- Children under 6 travel free if they do not occupy a separate seat.
- Children aged 6 to 14 receive a 25% discount.
- Students and vocational school pupils are entitled to a 50% discount, valid only in second-class (platskart) carriages.
- Combatants can enjoy free travel once every two years or a 50% discount once a year.
To claim these discounts, passengers must present the original document verifying their eligibility status.
The loss of benefits for some passenger groups could significantly impact their finances, especially amid ongoing economic instability. It is crucial for citizens to stay informed about the updated conditions and their rights to fare reductions when traveling.
