Fire in Switzerland: Among the Dead at the Resort There May Be Ukrainians.
According to ТСН: New Year's Eve at the elite ski resort of Crans-Montana has become one of the most tragic events in Switzerland's history. A fire in a popular bar killed around 40 people, and over a hundred ended up in hospitals with severe burns. The Ukrainian embassy is currently verifying whether any of our compatriots are among the victims.
DNA Tests and Weeks of Waiting: Identifying the Victims
At present, there is no information about the deceased. The bodies were so badly burned that they are impossible to identify visually. Experts believe that identification through DNA testing may take weeks.
Among the deceased are mostly young people aged 15 to 25, including foreigners, particularly citizens of France and Italy. The Ukrainian embassy in Switzerland continues communication with local authorities to check for the presence of Ukrainians among the victims.
“We Were Kicking the Windows”: Eyewitness Accounts of Survivors
Those who managed to escape the bar “Le Constellation” describe the events as a nightmare. The celebration in the crowded establishment quickly turned into panic.
“We were shouting: ‘Fire!’, but people thought it was a joke. And then – a cloud of black smoke, we could not breathe,” recalls eyewitness Nathan.
He notes that the exit was blocked by the crowd due to the too-narrow doors. He managed to kick a window open, pulling others out. Another witness, Axel, describes the chaos: people were jumping over each other’s heads, trying to break through the fire and smoke.
Condition of the Injured and Medical Assistance
More than 115 people have been hospitalized. Many of them have third-degree burns and respiratory injuries. Local hospitals are overcrowded, so the most seriously ill patients are being evacuated by helicopter to specialized centers in France. Doctors are fighting for the lives of patients, some of whom remain on artificial ventilation.
Causes of the Tragedy
The fire broke out at 01:30 AM. The wooden structure of the bar and its roof ignited instantly. The investigation is considering several versions:
The use of fireworks or sparklers indoors.
Candles traditionally brought out with drinks for the show.
Switzerland in Mourning
A 5-day mourning period has been declared in the country. The President of Switzerland, Guy Parmelin, canceled the New Year’s address, describing the tragedy in Crans-Montana as one of the most tragic chapters in the country’s history. People are continuously bringing flowers and candles to the site of the event.
