Tragedy in Dnipro

According to TSN.ua: On February 20, 2023, the body of 14-year-old Anastasiia Sytnikova was discovered in Dnipro. A cadet from the Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs (DSUIA) was present at the scene near where the girl's remains were found. In response, Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has initiated an official internal probe, with police participation.

Anastasiia’s body was located in an abandoned building that once housed the Nautilus café, also referred to as 'Mayak.' According to available information, the cadet photographed alongside the victim had no prior disciplinary record. This fact has raised further questions regarding the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

Reactions and Investigation

Commenting on the situation, the head of DSUIA, Ihor Mahdalina, stated that

“such an act is unacceptable”
and expressed condolences to the grieving family, adding:
“We share in this sorrow.”
Mahdalina emphasized that the institution will 'work closely with the Main Department of the National Police in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast' to clarify all details.

The internal investigation aims to establish all facts and circumstances of the tragedy and promises disciplinary action for those found responsible. The cadet in the photograph is a first-year student in the Criminal Police Faculty at DSUIA.

Notably, a fire broke out at the former café building on March 4, 2023, heightening public concern. Law enforcement continues to oversee the situation as the inquiry into this incident proceeds.

The death of Anastasiia Sytnikova has sparked widespread public outcry, drawing attention to youth safety and the accountability of law enforcement agencies. The Ministry of Internal Affairs’ internal investigation seeks not only to uncover the facts of this tragedy but also to restore public trust in educational institutions and the police.

As a result, the next steps taken by DSUIA and law enforcement will be closely monitored by both society and the media. This event could serve as a catalyst for reforms in security and training systems across Ukraine.
