Lost Diamond of an Empress Discovered Inside a Suitcase Found in Canada.
A Suitcase Belonging to Empress Zita Has Been Opened
According to TSN.ua: In Canada, a suitcase that had been kept in a bank vault for over a century has finally been opened. Inside, a collection of jewels was found, including the Florentine Diamond—a gem long believed to be lost. The suitcase once belonged to Empress Zita, the last empress of Austria-Hungary.
This piece of luggage had remained sealed in a bank vault for more than 100 years. Empress Zita decided to move part of her family’s valuables to Canada in the early 20th century, but the vault stayed closed following the death of Emperor Charles in 1922. Descendants of the Habsburgs, led by Karl von Habsburg-Lothringen, eventually opened the suitcase, which turned out to be a true treasure trove.
Why This Discovery Matters
Among the recovered jewels, the Florentine Diamond stands out. Weighing approximately 137 carats, this diamond originally belonged to the Medici family of Italy before passing into Habsburg hands. Empress Zita fled Belgium in 1940 as German forces advanced, adding another layer of history to the jewels that is tied to events following World War I.
The recovered treasures are expected to be displayed at a museum in Canada, giving the public a chance to explore the rich history behind these artifacts. The opening of the suitcase marks a significant event, highlighting the enduring link between the Habsburg dynasty’s past and the present day.
This find matters not only for Habsburg family history but also for understanding cultural connections between Europe and North America. An exhibition of jewels once owned by one of history’s most famous dynasties could draw attention to historical events surrounding World War I and the emigration of European monarchs. It may also spark further research into other historical artifacts stored in various countries around the world.
