Barn Owl Released into Tuzly Estuaries National Park

According to TSN.ua: A significant conservation milestone was achieved at Tuzly Estuaries National Park in the Odesa region: a barn owl—one of Ukraine’s rarest owl species—was returned to the wild after undergoing rehabilitation. This bird belongs to a group of 13 owl species found in Ukraine, and its population has been in steep decline due to human impact. Listed in Ukraine’s Red Book with an “endangered” status, the barn owl faces serious threats to its survival.

The barn owl is notable for its impressive wingspan, which can reach up to 90 centimeters. As a highly effective natural predator, it can eliminate thousands of rodents each year, making it a valuable ally in pest control. Releasing this owl back into its natural habitat marks a crucial step in preserving the species and restoring its numbers.

Ivan Rusev, a park representative, stated: 'We brought her to the national park and released her into the wild. She flew off beautifully, surveying the vast expanses of her new home from a bird’s-eye view.'

Significance of the Barn Owl Release

This release at Tuzly Estuaries National Park represents an important advance in efforts to protect endangered species and highlights the urgent need to preserve natural ecosystems. With barn owl populations declining due to human activities, such initiatives not only aid in population recovery but also contribute to broader biodiversity conservation across Ukraine.

Monitoring the released owl’s adaptation to the wild will be a key step in evaluating the success of rehabilitation programs and guiding future conservation actions.
