Ukraine creates sports classes in schools: what awaits students.

According to ТСН: In Ukrainian schools, a new format of education is planned to be implemented - sports classes with extended hours for students, allowing children to stay in school until the evening. The main goal is to create a base for preparing the future reserve of the national teams.

The Cabinet of Ministers supported amendments to Article 26 of the Law of Ukraine on Physical Culture and Sport. It concerns the introduction of specialized sports classes 'Path of Champions', which will appear across the country following a unified model.

Changes in legislation

This bill will establish clear rules for organizing and developing sports reserves so that students can train without missing main lessons. The document also defines the responsibilities of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which will be responsible for opening such groups, approving their operation procedures, and further control.

Funding and educational programs

At the initiative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, it is proposed to add a provision to the law allowing the creation of sports classes with extended educational hours. Students will have the opportunity to receive additional training, work with professional coaches, and participate in advanced classes according to the program. Importantly, funding for such classes will be included in the budgets, allowing schools to plan necessary resources and workload in advance.

In addition, it was previously reported about new child protection standards in schools. An incident in a Lviv school in November 2025 highlighted a serious security problem in educational institutions.

Recall that in Lviv, on the territory of one of the schools, a shooting occurred, resulting in one person being injured.

The introduction of sports classes in schools will be an important step towards the development of Ukrainian sports. This can significantly impact the training of young athletes and the scaling of the physical education system, emphasizing students' achievements in sports while not neglecting their education.
