Proposal to Lower Marriage Age Scrapped

According to TSN.ua: Following significant public criticism, Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has removed a controversial clause from a draft Civil Code that would have allowed marriage from the age of 14. The decision was announced by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, who confirmed the provision has been eliminated from the legislative project.

Under current Ukrainian law, the minimum marriage age is 18, though a court can permit marriage from age 16 in exceptional circumstances. The now-rejected draft law, No. 14394, had proposed allowing marriage from 14 in cases of pregnancy or childbirth. After public debate, lawmakers decided to scrap this proposal entirely and maintain the existing legal framework.

Significance of the Decision

Ruslan Stefanchuk emphasized that the removed clause was never intended to encourage marriage at 14. He highlighted the importance of a decision that considers public sentiment and civic opinion. This move maintains the status quo regarding the minimum age for marriage in Ukraine. This legislative reversal comes amid a broader European focus on protecting children's rights.

“The removal of the clause to lower the marriage age demonstrates the sensitivity of Ukrainian legislation to public opinion and the necessity of considering social aspects in legislative initiatives.”

This decision may positively impact public trust in legislative institutions, as it shows a willingness by authorities to respond to criticism and uphold existing social standards. The situation underscores the vital importance of dialogue between society and the state in shaping laws that align with the needs and values of citizens.
