Deadly Winter Storm Ravages US, Leaving Over 30 Dead and Widespread Power Outages.
Northeast US Gripped by Severe Winter Storm
According to TSN.ua: A powerful winter storm has swept across the northeastern United States, resulting in the deaths of more than 30 people and causing massive disruptions to the electrical grid. A state of emergency has been declared in 17 states and the District of Columbia, with the severe weather impacting at least 180 million people across 37 states. This storm system brought extreme cold far to the south, with temperatures plunging to -20°C in Texas, while Lewis County recorded a record low of -45°C.
Widespread Impact and Disruption
The storm dumped heavy snow, with 78 cm falling in New Mexico and up to 50 cm in areas north of Pittsburgh. The severe conditions left over 810,000 homes without power. Tennessee reported 250,000 power outages, Mississippi nearly 161,000, and Louisiana over 126,000. The travel sector was also crippled, with more than 14,500 flights canceled on January 25th alone, and an additional 5,500 flights delayed. This marked the worst day for U.S. flight cancellations since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Experts warn that the immediate danger is not over. "This storm is now exiting the East Coast, but lingering snow squalls remain. The primary concern, however, is the dangerously cold weather that is expected to persist into early February," noted Allison Santorelli.
In response to the life-threatening chill, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem urged residents to stay indoors. The situation nationwide remains critical, with authorities continuing to implement measures to ensure public safety. This event has proven to be one of the most destructive winter storms in the U.S. in recent years, highlighting the vulnerability of national infrastructure to extreme weather. Utility crews are working to restore power, and forecasts indicate the cold will continue to affect many regions, prompting officials to advise citizens to exercise caution and follow updates from local authorities.
