Kyiv Heating Crisis: Over 1,100 Buildings Face Two Months Without Heat After Power Plant Attack.
Critical Damage to Kyiv's Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant
According to TSN.ua: A Russian attack on Kyiv on February 3rd inflicted critical damage on the Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant (CHP). This has halted heating supplies to more than 1,100 apartment buildings in the capital. The station's equipment and engineering systems sustained severe damage requiring extensive repairs.
"The full restoration of the Darnytsia CHP will take at least two months," stated Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
The severity of the situation was evident on the morning of February 3rd, when residents had to drain water from their heating systems to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting.
Interim Measures to Provide Heat
To provide alternative heating sources in the affected region, mobile boiler units have been connected at the following locations:
- 5 points in the Darnytskyi district
- 4 points in the Dniprovskyi district
Additionally, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) is deploying emergency heating points:
- 36 points in the Darnytskyi district
- 27 points in the Dniprovskyi district
The energy company DTEK has also implemented preferential electricity supply schedules to alleviate the burden on residents impacted by the heating cutoff. However, until the Darnytsia CHP is repaired, residents will remain without central heating, a situation that poses significant hardship during the winter months. This attack highlights the vulnerability of Ukraine's urban infrastructure to targeted strikes, which have become a frequent tactic in the ongoing war.
The incident underscores the critical vulnerability of the capital's infrastructure amidst ongoing hostilities, with serious consequences for residents, especially in winter. Restoring the Darnytsia CHP is now a top priority for city services, as the proper functioning of the heating system is essential for maintaining livable conditions in Kyiv.
