Designer Dogs Underperform Compared to Mixed Breeds: Findings from a Major Study.
Behavioral Study of Hybrid Dogs in the United Kingdom
According to TSN.ua: A large-scale behavioral study conducted in the UK has revealed that popular designer dog breeds—such as Cockapoos, Cavapoos, and Labradoodles—can exhibit just as many behavioral issues as purebred dogs. The research analyzed 9,402 hybrid dogs, which were produced by crossing poodles with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels, or Labrador Retrievers. These crosses are often marketed as hypoallergenic or family-friendly pets.
Assessment of Canine Behavior
Behavior was evaluated using the standardized C-BARQ tool. The results showed that in over 44% of cases, hybrid dogs displayed more undesirable behaviors compared to their purebred counterparts. In nearly 46% of comparisons, no significant differences were observed, while fewer than 10% of hybrids demonstrated better behavior.
- Cockapoos scored worse in 16 out of 24 behavioral categories.
- Cavapoos performed worse in 11 categories.
- Labradoodles showed deterioration in only five aspects.
These findings highlight the need for deeper investigation into the behavior of hybrid dogs and their adaptation to home environments, as the problems can be as serious as those seen in purebred animals.
The results carry significant implications for potential dog owners considering hybrid breeds. They underscore the importance of making an informed choice, emphasizing that behavioral challenges can arise regardless of a dog's lineage. This also affects trainers and veterinarians working with hybrid breeds, who may need to pay closer attention to the specific needs of these dogs during training and socialization.
