Lithuanian Prime Minister Issues Statement on Drone Explosion
According to TSN.ua: An unidentified drone crashed and exploded in Lithuania's Varėna District, sparking immediate concern. Lithuanian military radars failed to detect the aircraft's flight path, raising serious questions about airspace security. In response, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has convened an emergency session of the National Security Commission for March 24 at 10:00 AM to review the incident and its potential implications.
The crash occurred in a region bordering Belarus, where investigators recovered an internal combustion engine commonly used in certain drone models. Despite the explosion, Šimonytė reassured the public, stating that
“the object that fell in the Varėna District does not pose a danger to local residents.”However, she emphasized that official conclusions would only be possible after a thorough investigation, according to expert Gintautas Cijūnis.
Lithuanian Authorities Respond
On March 22, Vilnius Airport temporarily suspended operations due to a threat originating from Belarus. This latest incident serves as a stark warning for Lithuanian authorities, who remain on high alert along the border. Analysts note that such events could introduce additional risks to national security, making it essential to investigate each case meticulously.
The drone explosion in Lithuania underscores growing regional tensions, particularly in light of the threat from Belarus.
