Polish National Dies in Taganrog Detention Center After Alleged Torture: Key Details Emerge.
Death of Krzysztof Hałas
According to TSN.ua: Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the death of Polish citizen Krzysztof Hałas in a pre-trial detention facility in Taganrog, following his arrest by Russian forces in occupied Melitopol. Hałas disappeared after traveling to Ukraine in April 2023, and the stated grounds for his detention were 'opposition to the special military operation.'
Hałas was taken into custody in occupied Melitopol and transferred to pre-trial detention center No. 2 in Taganrog, a city in Russia's Rostov region. According to available information, Hałas died on July 4, 2023, with the cause of death listed as 'cardiomyopathy of unknown origin.' His burial was carried out at a Taganrog cemetery at the expense of the Russian state budget.
Hałas's family and Polish diplomats have not received a death certificate. He was last seen alive on April 20, 2023, at a Ukrainian checkpoint in the village of Hryhorivka, Zaporizhzhia region. Four Ukrainian soldiers have confirmed that Hałas was subjected to torture while in detention. Information about his case only became public in December 2025.
Reaction and International Scrutiny
The response from the family and diplomatic officials has been one of deep concern. The deceased's son stated:
“The most important thing for our family is to ensure our father receives a proper burial and to obtain his death certificate.”
The case of Krzysztof Hałas has sparked outrage and worry, as the circumstances of his arrest and death remain unknown to his loved ones. The matter continues to draw attention, with questions surrounding his detention, the conditions of his confinement, and the events leading to his death remaining critical for both investigators and the international community.
Hałas's death raises serious questions about human rights and the treatment of detainees in Russia. The absence of a death certificate and the confirmed reports of torture have generated alarm not only among his family but also at the international level, potentially heightening diplomatic tensions between Poland and Russia. This incident is likely to prompt further investigation by international organizations to clarify the circumstances of Hałas's detention and death, as well as to determine accountability for human rights violations.
