Petteri Orpo Takes Aim at Viktor Orbán

According to TSN.ua: During a European Council meeting in Brussels, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo leveled sharp criticism at Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, accusing him of exploiting Ukraine as a political tool for his own electoral campaign. The remarks came as EU leaders gathered to discuss critical funding for Ukraine, highlighting growing internal divisions within the bloc.

Pressure on Hungary and Support for Ukraine

EU leaders are planning to push Orbán to lift his veto on a loan for Ukraine that was agreed upon in December of last year. The total financial aid package for Ukraine amounts to 90 billion euros, aimed at sustaining the country amid the ongoing conflict. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also urged the unblocking of financial assistance for Ukraine, stating, 'We must not defer to even a single EU member state.'

Orpo emphasized that the situation in Ukraine is being manipulated by Orbán for personal political benefit, noting:

“He (Orbán) is using Ukraine as a weapon in his election campaign.”
Additionally, Orpo highlighted who stands to gain the most from the current chaos and rising energy prices, pointing directly at Russia:
“We need to understand who benefits most from this chaos and the rise in energy prices. It is Russia.”

Against this backdrop, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for adherence to commitments made within the European Council:

“I expect you to respect the obligations you have taken on in the European Council.”
This situation underscores the critical need for EU unity in supporting Ukraine against aggression and addressing the financial challenges that remain pressing.

Orpo’s criticism signals an escalation of tensions among EU member states over support for Ukraine and the domestic politics of individual nations. Increased pressure on Hungary could prove pivotal in strengthening EU cohesion on Ukraine, especially given the ongoing conflict. It is essential for EU countries to act collectively to provide effective aid to Ukraine, as its stability has a significant impact on the security of the entire region.
