Ukrainians in Berlin organize a resilience center amid four-day blackout.
According to ТСН: In Berlin, the capital of Germany, a power outage in the district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf has been ongoing for the fourth day due to the arson of cables at the local power station. Ukrainians who found refuge in Berlin have organized a special "resilience center" for residents to help them cope with the consequences of the blackout.
Help from Ukrainians
Oksana Orel, who represents the Ukrainian community on the migration and integration committee of the district administration, moved to Berlin with her daughter after the full-scale invasion of Russia began. Together with other Ukrainians, she founded the AdlerA e.V. center, which helps migrants adapt. During the power outage, the center has also become a "resilience center" for local residents.
The center has electricity from another line, so electrical appliances can be used here.
"People from apartment buildings where stoves and boilers don't work come to us. They can't even make tea. We suggested bringing thermoses and taking hot water home, "Oksana recounts.
Ukrainians' own experience
Oksana explains that the center operates not only to support the community but also to share experiences of enduring similar situations.
"We say: 'It's not so bad that the power is out for a few days — such situations happen in Ukraine too. Everything will be fine.' This experience is very useful,"she adds.
According to her, for Germans, such sudden outages have been a real stress, as planned outages are usually announced weeks in advance.
"People were scared. I heard someone say: 'We thought the Russians were attacking us. We thought the war had come here,' "Oksana shares.
Causes of the outage
Earlier, it was reported that in the southwestern part of Berlin, tens of thousands of residents were left without electricity. Thousands of families had to seek shelter with friends or use emergency centers due to the lack of light and heat.
It is known that the arson of a cable switch over the Teltow Canal, which feeds the Lichterfelde power station, damaged important trunk lines. Currently, police are conducting an investigation regarding the arson.
The power outage in Berlin has proven to be a serious test for local residents, but it has also served as evidence of community solidarity. Ukrainians have actively engaged in providing assistance, which has been especially important in the unstable situation. At this critical moment, such initiatives help not only solve practical problems but also support the morale of residents, uniting them in difficult times.
