Russian Strikes on Ukraine Cut Key Power Line to Moldova—Here’s What Happened.
Blackout of Moldova's Power Link
According to TSN.ua: A critical 400 kV cross-border power line connecting Isaccea, Romania, to Vulcănești, Moldova, went offline after Russian attacks targeted energy infrastructure in Ukraine. The disruption occurred shortly after 7:00 PM, triggering an emergency in Moldova's power grid. This line serves as the main route for electricity imports from Romania, so its failure has severely impacted Moldova's energy supply.
Energy System Status
As of 11:00 PM, Moldova's electricity consumption stands at around 620 MW. Domestic generation covers only 320 MW—120 MW of which comes from the Transnistrian region—leaving a 300 MW shortfall that is being met by imports from Ukraine. Similar incidents happened as recently as late January, highlighting persistent vulnerabilities in the region's energy infrastructure.
Despite the line outage, Moldova continues to receive power from Ukraine, helping to maintain some stability. Engineers are currently working to restore the transmission line, though no timeline for repairs has been announced yet.
The shutdown of the Isaccea–Vulcănești line underscores how exposed Moldova's energy system is to external threats. These events pose serious risks to the country's energy security, especially given its heavy reliance on imported electricity. The continued flow of power from Ukraine emphasizes the importance of cross-border cooperation during this energy crisis.
