Ukraine Signals Readiness for New Nuclear Reactor Deal with Bulgaria.
Nuclear Energy Cooperation Between Ukraine and Bulgaria
According to TSN.ua: Ukraine has expressed its willingness to move forward with Bulgaria on the purchase of nuclear power units. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this announcement during a press conference alongside Bulgaria’s acting Prime Minister, Andrey Gyurov. The meeting took place as Bulgaria anticipates early parliamentary elections scheduled for April 19, 2023, adding political significance to the discussions.
In 2023, Bulgaria agreed to sell Ukraine two VVER-1000 reactors. Under the terms of this agreement, Ukraine was to pay 600 million euros. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation, stating:
'In my view, we are simply sending a signal that we are ready to continue cooperation on nuclear power units.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Bulgaria’s position was also articulated during the press conference. Andrey Gyurov commented on the deal, noting:
'I do not think the price is the main issue at this point.' Andrey Gyurov
This suggests Bulgaria is open to constructive dialogue and collaboration with Ukraine in the energy sector. As a result, nuclear energy cooperation between the two countries is gaining momentum, reinforcing their strategic partnership and shared interest in bolstering energy security.
Significance of the Agreement for Ukraine and Bulgaria
This agreement holds major importance for Ukraine, as it seeks to strengthen its energy infrastructure and reduce reliance on external energy suppliers. Partnering with Bulgaria in nuclear energy could advance not only energy security but also technology development and investment in this critical sector.
For Bulgaria, this deal could serve as a key step in deepening economic ties with Ukraine ahead of the parliamentary elections, potentially influencing the country’s political landscape.
