Ukrainian POW Used Harry Potter Tales to Lift Comrades' Spirits

According to TSN.ua: For nearly four years, Ukrainian marine Oleksandr Ivanov has been held as a prisoner of war by Russian forces. His wife, Nelli, decided to write to author J.K. Rowling to share how her husband, a devoted 'Potterhead' who has read the books countless times, has been retelling the Harry Potter stories to fellow prisoners to help them endure their harsh conditions. The Harry Potter series has a global legacy of providing comfort and escapism, a role it now plays in one of the world's most dire conflict zones.

Years in Captivity

Oleksandr Ivanov last spoke with his family on January 25, 2022, during a final meeting with relatives. His last message to his wife was sent on April 12, 2022. He has now spent two years in a penal colony in Mordovia. Nelli recalls that they have an 8-year-old son, Demyd, who desperately awaits his father's return.

In her letter to J.K. Rowling, Nelli wrote:

"Dear Joanne, I am writing to you on behalf of my husband, who is in a captivity worse than Azkaban."

Oleksandr shares the Harry Potter narratives with his fellow captives to bolster their morale amidst the immense hardship. He expressed the depth of their despair to Nelli, stating, "That's it. We have nothing left, we don't know what to do."

Their son, Demyd, also voices his fervent hope:

"Sasha Ivanov, come home!"

This account underscores not only the family's anguish but also the enduring power of human connection and shared culture in the most extreme circumstances.

The situation illustrates the profound impact of the war on Ukrainian families and the critical importance of psychological resilience for prisoners of war. Nelli's letter to Rowling highlights both the severe suffering her husband endures and how literature can serve as a vital source of hope and solidarity. It also draws attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and human rights issues faced by POWs in Ukraine and other global conflicts.
