Woman Invented Problems for Money: Mykolaiv Court Sentences Online Fraudster.
Fraud Case in Mykolaiv Region
According to TSN.ua: A woman in the Mykolaiv region has been convicted for a scheme where she fabricated personal crises to extract money from a man she met on social media. The Vradiivskyi District Court found her guilty under parts 1 and 2 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This case highlights how scammers exploit emotional connections to defraud victims.
How the Fraud Worked
The woman launched her fraudulent activities in early 2024 by creating two Facebook profiles posing as attractive women. According to investigators, on June 19, 2024, the victim made 8 payments totaling 39,200 hryvnias. Her demands grew increasingly brazen:
- She demanded 17,000 hryvnias to 'resolve an issue' regarding mobilization into the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
- The final large transfer was 20,000 hryvnias, which she claimed was needed to pay off a debt for electric heating.
In total, the victim transferred 119,400 hryvnias to her.
After reviewing the case, the court decided to release the woman from serving her sentence, placing her on a one-year probation period. Additionally, the court ordered her to pay the victim 114,400 hryvnias in restitution. During the investigation, two mobile phones—a Redmi Note 12 and a HOMI model—were confiscated. This ruling marks a significant step in combating fraud in Ukraine.
This incident underscores the growing problem of fraud in Ukraine, especially with the widespread use of social media.
Technology provides criminals with new opportunities for manipulation and deception, threatening user safety. The court's decision may serve as a warning to potential victims, emphasizing the need for caution in online interactions and the ability to recognize scammers early.
