Russia attacks railway facilities in the Sumy region with drones.
Large-scale drone attack on rail infrastructure
According to TSN.ua: On the night of February 5, Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on the railway infrastructure in the Sumy region. An unmanned aerial vehicle of the type 'Geran-2' struck facilities in the districts of Shostka and Ochtyrka. The railway is a vital backbone for Ukrainian supplies and troop movements.
The attack caused significant damage to the following objects:
- Buildings
- Track facilities
- A diesel locomotive
- A heating station
- Technical operating rooms
A railway worker in the Shostka district sustained injuries. Despite the severe destruction, there were no fatalities. Additionally, the force of the explosions destroyed over 50 windows in a multi-family house in the residential area of the Sarichne district.
Reactions and strategic significance
Oleksij Kuleba commented on the incidents: 'This is another act of terror against Ukrainian logistics. The enemy is trying to stop train traffic. The Ukrainian railway is tightening its security protocols and keeping the trains running.'
Such attacks demonstrate Russia's strategic goal of destabilizing Ukrainian transport routes and supply lines. Maintaining railway operations under wartime conditions is of critical importance. In response to the threat, security measures at railway facilities are continually being increased and protective measures for the infrastructure are being strengthened.
