Storm Leonardo Ravages Iberia: Thousands Evacuated as Spain and Portugal Declare Emergency.
Destruction Across Iberia in the Wake of Storm Leonardo
According to TSN.ua: Storm Leonardo has caused severe damage across Spain and Portugal, unleashing record rainfall and widespread flooding. As of February 6, more than 7,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in Spain. The storm has claimed at least one life in Portugal, while in Spain, a body believed to be that of a woman swept away by floodwaters has been recovered. This powerful Atlantic storm is part of a pattern of increasingly severe winter weather affecting Western Europe.
In the town of Grazalema, approximately 1,500 residents faced an urgent evacuation due to dangerous conditions from torrential rains. The Douro River overflowed its banks in Porto, causing major inundation. The city of Alcácer do Sal has been partially submerged for a third consecutive day. Due to the extensive damage, Portugal has extended its state of emergency to 69 municipalities, including the aforementioned city.
Economic and Political Fallout
Portugal's upcoming presidential election faces potential postponement because of the crisis. In Spain's Jaén province, damage to olive crops is estimated at over 200 million euros. Forecasters warn that another storm, named Marta, could bring further flooding to the already saturated region.
Experts are warning of potential landslides in the mountains of Grazalema due to overwhelmed aquifers. 'The aquifers in the Grazalema mountains are saturated and could trigger landslides from the accumulated pressure,' noted Juan Manuel Moreno.
"I have nothing left, absolutely nothing. I only saved the clothes I was wearing," said Rita Morgado.
Storm Leonardo continues to disrupt the lives of thousands, posing severe challenges for local authorities and emergency services.
The crisis in Spain and Portugal highlights the growing risks associated with climate change, which is increasing the frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events. Authorities in both nations are confronting the urgent need for measures to ensure public safety and rebuild infrastructure. The looming threat of Storm Marta underscores the demand for additional resources to prevent further destruction and support affected communities.
